Some people like to change their blogging system often (cough Luke and Kev cough). I don’t really like to do that. I’ve settled into Hugo and my (basic) site layout. But, I do like to tinker with the server that hosts my website. So I changed the OS that serves my sites. Again…
I Know This
I wanted to move off of Linux. A lot of the big distros are making decisions that don’t sit well with me. Be it social “issues” that have nothing to do with their product, or pushing for more AI use in development. I’ve also grown over the years, more used to a BSD UNIX system (thank you, macOS). So, I spun up a couple of VPSs, installed FreeBSD on them, and moved everything over.
The move was pretty smooth. At least for my main server. The server for IsMetroBurning.com took a little longer. Testing and changing some file checks were the reason. The funny part, IMB originally ran on FreeBSD, back when I used NearlyFreeSpeech.NET for hosting. So it’s now back on its original OS.
I was originally thinking I couldn’t run FreeBSD on my VPS provider, DigitalOcean. They support using custom images that support cloudInit, cool. But officially, they only support OS’s that use the ext3/4 file system. Turns out, UFS works just fine. Including upsizing the VM and disk.

So yeah, I’m on UNIX now.
